Wellness Landscapes

Cross-references:

The concept

The concept centres on a new combination of healthcare, recreation and agriculture, which reinforces the economy and responds more effectively to the needs of patients and recreation seekers, while improving the quality of the landscape The underlying arguments are:

  • The rural area is interesting for healthcare because of trends towards deinstitutionalization and the beneficial effects of a green environment on certain patient groups;
  • Many buildings in rural areas that are being abandoned can be converted or renovated to accommodate health and wellness services;
  • Recreation is relevant because it is not just about cure and care, but also wellness;
  • Agriculture requires more land to grow in scale. Health and recreation need little land for themselves and can thus offer space to agriculture;
  • Health and recreation both benefit from an open and attractive landscape. They can act as owner and manager of landscape elements and hire farmers to maintain that landscape. In this way, they can become new pillars of the rural economy.
The intention is to give the quality of entire regions a boost, rather than focusing exclu-sively on the quality of small individual units such as farmsteads.
